Chapter Eleven

Warmth radiated through Darik’s body as he watched Trinity cut vegetables for their meal. They worked in silence, but it was pleasant and easy.

Trinity met his gaze. “What?” he asked.

Darik shrugged, his pulse racing. “Just thinking how nice cooking with you is,” he said and smiled.

“You and Templeton don’t share any familial resemblance,” Trinity said. “Are you adopted?”

“We both are,” Darik replied quietly.

“Did you ever try to find your birth parents?”

“No.” He frowned and dread tightened his stomach. “I never saw any reason. They didn’t seek me out, so I must not have been more than a blip on their radar at one time.”

“You never wanted to know where you really came from?” Trinity asked. “You’re clearly not all black.”

“I don’t see why that should matter to me, Trinity,” he said coldly. “My parents were good to me. They love me. Why are you asking me this?”

“I was curious,” he said and reached for a bottle of water and took a swig.

Darik sighed deeply. “There has to be a reason.”

“When we were talking about sirens you seemed to have some kind of inside knowledge.”

He shook his head. Was it too much to ask for one more night with him?

“My parents think I’m psychic, that’s all,” Darik said quietly. “It never occurred to them I might not be all human. They gave me the best advice they could have. Hide my abilities.”

“How’d you learn you were a siren?”

“How’d you know?” Darik’s heart stopped and his stomach tightened as fear snaked through him.

“The mark on your shoulder,” Trinity replied. “Have you even seen it?”

“My parents thought I’d been tattooed.” Darik held his gaze a moment longer then turned off the pan he was pan-frying fish in. “I guess you’re breaking up with me. That should make Gary happy. You’re just a shiny object to him.”

“Am I?”

“The key to social climbing and comfort.”

“My money? That’s what he’s after?” Trinity laughed. “My parents are wealthy, but I’m not. I’m no pauper, but I’m not a sugar daddy either.”

“He’ll leave you alone then when he realizes.” He put the fish on two plates and turned back to the stove. Darik cleared his throat. Trinity set down the knife and crossed the room, cutting board in hand.

Darik refused to meet his gaze as Trinity raked the food into the pan and set the cutting board aside. He started to stir them around while Trinity rinsed his hands.

“Darik, I’m not sure this is about material things,” Trinity said, leaning against the counter on the other side of the stove. “Have you ever been to a club called Dark Desires?”

“A couple of weeks ago, I checked it out,” Darik admitted. “I heard it was the place to be for BDSM. There were some hot Doms there, good play to be had, and I got the feeling I was surrounded by plenty of not-so-human people.”

“That’s why you haven’t been back?” Trinity asked coolly.

“No.” He shook his head. “It was trying too hard to be cool and I didn’t like the dark vibes I got.
